A practical tool to evaluate whether a teaching story or illustration is appropriate for the local community.

How to use this matrix

  1. List the story or illustration you plan to use.
  2. Identify whether it fits Category 1 through Category 5.
  3. Choose the clearest and most locally relevant story available.

Categories

  • Category 1: Foreign concepts nobody understands
  • Category 2: Foreign concepts some may understand
  • Category 3: Familiar concepts with foreign values
  • Category 4: Locally experienced and understood
  • Category 5: Experienced but not understood; useful as a bridge

Guidance

  • Prefer Category 4 whenever possible.
