Language Learning introduces realistic expectations and practical habits for learners preparing to communicate in a new context.

Introductory course

This course is available as an initial public draft. It should be reviewed by responsible ministry leaders before use in formal training.

Course Purpose

This course helps learners treat language learning as an act of love, humility, and practical preparation. It also introduces the difference between trade language and heart language, and invites learners to build agreements with local helpers for safe practice.

Intended Audience

  • Prospective missionaries.
  • Mission-minded families.
  • Churches and sponsors supporting language learners.

Prerequisites

Recommended: Missionary Readiness 101 and Cross-Cultural Service.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Set realistic expectations for language acquisition.
  • Describe daily habits that support progress.
  • Differentiate trade language and heart language.
  • Use local helpers respectfully and with clear boundaries.
  • Plan for language learning as ministry preparation, not a side task.

Estimated Time

45-60 minutes.

Practical Output

A 30/60/90-day language learning plan, a short reflection on how you will use a local language helper, and a proposed helper agreement for practicing respectfully.

Practical Assignment
