Field Language Acquisition

Field Language Acquisition is a Level 2 Field Practitioner course based on the LACE methodology. It is designed for workers in contexts without formal language schools, where learners depend on local helpers, simple materials, and daily practice.

This course is designed for active field learners, tentmakers, and team members who need language acquisition methods that work outside classrooms.

Course Purpose

This course equips learners to manage their own language learning, use local language helpers wisely, and make steady progress through TPR, picture books, and real-life language acquisition projects.

Intended Audience

  • Field workers and teams without access to formal language school programs
  • Independent missionaries who need a practical, learner-driven language strategy
  • Sending partners and support leaders who coach language helpers and learners

Prerequisites

Recommended: Language Learning or Cross-Cultural Service.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Take ownership of their language study process.
  • Use power-tool phrases to keep sessions in the target language.
  • Build comprehension with TPR and culturally relevant picture books.
  • Design and complete language acquisition projects in the local setting.
  • Recognize the emotional challenges of immersive language learning.

Completion criteria

  • Review the course overview and all five lessons.
  • Complete the power-tools checklist and helper agreement.
  • Draft a 90-day LAP and discuss it with a mentor or sending partner.

  • Encourage learners to treat language helpers as partners rather than teachers.
  • Watch for discouragement that comes from initial mistakes and slow progress.
  • Apply local cultural norms to helper agreements and project scenarios.
