Lesson 2: The E-Scale of Ministry (Measuring Cultural Distance)¶
Course/series¶
Field Resilience, Team Health, and Reentry
Audience¶
- Workers planning cross-cultural service
- Teams evaluating their adaptation needs
- Mentors helping others gauge preparation gaps
Purpose¶
Teach learners to assess the cultural distance of their calling using the E-Scale, so they can match preparation to the demands of their assignment.
Learning objectives¶
- Define E-0 through E-3 ministry contexts
- Place a calling on the E-Scale accurately
- Identify preparation gaps based on E-Scale level
Core principle¶
The greater the cultural distance, the higher the need for worldview adaptation, language learning, and support systems.
Field problem¶
Workers often underestimate cultural distance, treating all ministry assignments as if they require the same level of preparation.
Key concepts¶
- E-0: evangelism in own culture among nominal Christians
- E-1: outreach to unchurched people in same culture
- E-2: ministry in a similar but different culture
- E-3: ministry in a vastly different culture
Practical framework¶
Use the E-Scale Ministry Assessment to place your calling and list specific preparation needs for language, culture, and worldview.
Scenario or case exercise¶
A worker assumes their early career skills are enough for a distant culture, then struggles with local assumptions and language nuance.
Checklist or worksheet¶
- What E-Scale number best describes your current calling?
- Which areas of preparation are missing? (language, culture, community entry)
- What support or training do you need next?
Discussion questions¶
- How does E-3 preparation differ from E-1 preparation?
- What assumptions might you need to let go of at your E-Scale level?
- Who can help you evaluate your cultural distance accurately?
Field assignment¶
Complete the E-Scale Ministry Assessment and compare your results with a mentor or sending team.
